From Duty to Warn to Coloring for Teens: The Top School Counseling Posts of 2025

Happy New Year, School Counselors! 🎉

Can you believe we’ve officially turned the page on another year? As we step into 2026 (how did that happen so fast?), I’m continuing my annual tradition of reflecting back and sharing the top 10 blog posts from 2025—the ones that resonated most with most high school counselors.

While I didn’t get to write and publish as much as I hoped this past year, due to a job change, it’s always fascinating (and honestly affirming) to see which topics school counselors continue to return to for support, clarity, and well, honestly some practical guidance. After more than 12 years of blogging (truly—where did the time go?), some posts remain favorites, while others reflect emerging conversations and evolving student needs.

Here’s the countdown of the most-read blog posts of 2025. I hope you enjoy revisiting them—and maybe even discovering one you missed!

10. Duty to Warn: When Does It Apply to Informing Parents About Teenage Pregnancy

This post once again earned a spot in the top 10. Conversations around teenage pregnancy can be ethically complex and emotionally charged. This post walks through ASCA Ethical Standards, highlights key considerations, and links to state laws to help school counselors navigate these situations with confidence and professionalism.

9. Why Students Dislike Their School Counselors

I’ll be honest—I didn’t enjoy writing this one. It grew out of conversations with a group of discouraged counselors I worked with years ago. The post is candid (maybe uncomfortably so) and centers on how attitude, approachability, and self-awareness directly impact student relationships. Sometimes reflection is the most powerful professional development.

8. 175 School Counseling Resources

This post has stayed in the top 10 for years—and for good reason. Everyone loves a solid resource list! This evergreen collection has been a go-to since the early days of the blog. It’s officially overdue for an update, so keep an eye out for a refreshed and expanded version soon.

7. Coloring for Teens

Sliding down a spot this year, this post reflects the continued interest in low-cost, calming interventions. As coloring gained traction as a stress-management strategy, this post became a favorite. It includes practical ideas and resources to help you integrate coloring into your counseling program with intention.

6. SI Resources for the Clueless School Counselor

A long-standing favorite since 2015, this post continues to support counselors who feel unsure—or overwhelmed—when working with students who self-harm. Written from real-world experience, it offers practical resources and reassurance for counselors navigating these high-stakes situations.

5. Comfort Kits for Students Who Self-Harm

Moving up the list, this post shares ideas for creating comfort kits for students who engage in self-harming behaviors. These kits offer immediate, tangible support and are often a powerful supplement to ongoing counseling and safety planning.

4. School Counselor Bucket List

This classic encourages counselors to dream a little—professionally and personally. From meaningful career goals to small joys that sustain us throughout the year, the bucket list continues to evolve. One of my favorite parts? Seeing how students often want to create their own versions, too.

3. Making a Safe Place for Students Who Identify as Furries, Therians, and Otherkins

Still one of the most talked-about posts on the blog, this piece continues to generate strong reactions—and even made national news at one point. At its core, the post focuses on the responsibility school counselors have to create safe, inclusive environments for all students, regardless of how they identify.

2. Teen Hygiene Issues: Tips for School Counselors

Some challenges truly are timeless—and teen hygiene is one of them. This post remains popular year after year because it offers respectful, practical strategies for addressing hygiene concerns while preserving student dignity (and everyone else’s noses).

1. The Ultimate List of School Counseling Forms

For yet another year, this post takes the top spot! With over 1,000 downloadable forms, it continues to be the most-visited resource on the blog—helping counselors organize, streamline, and survive the day-to-day demands of the job.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Thank you for being part of this community and for the work you do every single day to support students, families, and schools. I’m looking forward to sharing more ideas, resources, and real-talk reflections with you in 2026 as a school therapist.

Here’s to a year of connection, growth, and sustainability—for you and your students.

Happy New Year! 🎆
